The growth potential of Brazilian ecommerce - 31/03/2010

In 2009, the ecommerce in Brazil grew 30% comparing to the previous year. The sales reached $5,5 billion and the predictions for 2010 are of a growth of more 30%.

An economic Brazilian magazine presented a comparative table with the ecommerce numbers in USA and in Brazil. The differences are big in all items, since the USA is a more developed country and more people have access to internet connections than in Brazil. But considering that more Brazilian retailers are coming online, broadband is becoming more present at consumers homes and there are more people purchasing on the internet, the scenario becomes exciting for ecommerce in Brazil.

In Brazil, 26% of the 65 million of internet users have bought online (67% in USA). In average they have spent $330 (1000 in USA), mainly buying books, magazines, household appliances, healthy and beauty products.

Despite all the local excitement, retailers cannot be deluded by regular statistics that show high levels of satisfaction coming from clients that have bought online. And what about the ones that couldn’t buy, that were not able to finish their purchase? We don’t have statistics for the number of sales that failed, but we know there are plenty of them in the majority of ecommerce web sites.

Brazilian online retailers must be aware that ecommerce popularity in Brazil will increase as more people have positive online experiences.
