About Brazil and Latin America

Latin America includes 20 countries from South, Central and North Americas.

Brazil is the biggest country of the region, with 8.5 million square kilometers, and is also the most populated, with 193 million inhabitants.

Brazil is the only country in Latin America that speaks Portuguese, surrounded by Spanish speaking countries.

São Paulo with 10,886,518 inhabitants and Mexico with 8,720,916 of people are the biggest cities of Latin America.

Internet

Latin America is the fastest-growing internet audience region in the world. According to ComScore report (2010), Latin American Internet audience grew 23 percent during the past year.

Latin Americans are coming online in huge numbers. The major markets are Brazil and Mexico. A study by Everis and the IESE Business School (2008) found that one in ten global internet users are from Latin America, and half of these are from Brazil.

Brazilians love the internet: we spend on average 45 hours online per month (IBOPE Nielsen OnlineNetview, January 2010). Brazilians are the people who spend the longest time on the internet (more than British, French, American, Australian and Japanese).

Social network is very popular in Brazil, we also top the charts with the highest percentage (86%) of Internet consumers visiting a social network, followed by Italy, Spain, Japan, United States, United Kingdom, France, Australia and Germany (The Nielsen Company, April 2010).

The total number of internet users in Brazil has reached 73 million (ComScore, May 2010).

Broadband adoption in Latin America is growing beyond expectations.

Broadband report from Huawei (2010) predicts that Brazil will end 2010 with 18 million mobile broadband accesses and 13 million fixed broadband accesses.

In 2014, Brazil will have 90 million broadband subscribers, 60 million mobile broadband and 30 million fixed broadband (3G Americas).

Mobile

Latin America has 534 million mobile subscriptions, it corresponds to 11% of subscriptions worldwide (3G America, 2010).

Smartphone popularity and sales are increasing in Brazil as recent price reductions have made these devices more accessible to people. Sales of smartphones were up 128% in the first half of 2010 compared to the same period in 2009 (The Nielsen Company, 2010).

According to Anatel (National Telecom Agency from Brazil), the country has more than 185 million mobile phones and more than 10 million are smartphones.

Until 2014, 25% of mobile phone subscribers in Brazil will have a smartphone (3G Americas).
